The best book I’ve read in 2011, if you use the internet you really should read or listen to this book.

Eli Pariser’s The Filter Bubble gives a detailed history of how and why the Internet as a whole has moved more and more towards greater personalization. While personalization definitely has it’s advantages Pariser also explores the disadvantages and where we may be heading if things are not evaluated.

As a marketer I can understand why companies would want this type of relationship with consumers as it would make it easier to communicate with prospects; but I sat on the fence through parts of this book. Outside of the marketing perspective it’s increasingly scary to how far this could go, not only from a privacy stand point, but also what information you may miss out on if the filters don’t change/improve.

Pariser speaking at TED summing up the concept of the Filter Bubble.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone using the internet but for anyone working in the digital marketing industry this is a must read and belongs on the shelf next to The Long Tail, The One to One Future, The Cluetrain Manifesto and the like.

Lastly I consume most business book in audio form and this version as an audio book was very pleasent to listen to. The narrator, Kirby Heyborne, had an authoritative voice and while sometimes he spoke a bit slowly for my liking he kept my attention grounded throughout.

If you’ve read/listened to it, let me know what you thought.
